Nowadays, LED bulbs have grown to be more and more popularly accepted by the the public. The appearance of LED light bulbs looks very much the same (or similar if not the same) as the conventional light bulubs. This article will discuss the commonly seen lampholders of LED bulbs, e.g., E26/E27, B22, MR16, GU10, Par 30 and Par 38 etc.

Light Emitting Diodes, or LEDs, are widely used in the present day in a range of devices – LEDs can be founded in remote controls, toys, and machines etc. Also, LEDs are widely used for traffic lights, i.e., traffic signals, message boards etc. However, up to date, LEDs have not grown to be widely used in the traditional lighting business, most likely because LED lights are still significantly more expensive than traditional lighting such as incandescentlight bulbs and fluorescent tubes.

However, the cons of LED light bulbs should not stop us to have a look at them. There could be so many topics about LED lamps that we are likely to need tons of articles to discuss. But in this specific one, we will only focus on the design of LED lamps.

Based upon installation, lamp holders can be typically split into bayonet-type and screw-type, etc. Determined by material, lamp holders are made of plastic, metal, ceramics, etc. For instance, E27 maybe the most frequently used screw lampholder forlight bulbs. And the common lampholders for fluorescent and energy-saving tubes are referred to as T10, T8 and T5.

A few lampholders may call for up to IP68 protection grading. Generally, lampholder are requested to meet IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission standard) security certification.

Lampholder Classification:

Typically, the name of a lampholder type is likely to be like this “letter(s) + number(s)”. A letter at the beginning often suggests the shape of the bulb, i.e. E for Edison, T for tubular, R for reflector.

E12, E14, E26, E27, E40 and other names with an “E” followed by a number are all Edison screw lamp holders. Apparently, E symbolizes Edison, the name of the great man who invented incandescent bulb. E27 is commonly implemented in residential lighting – incandescentlight bulbs. E14 has a smaller size compared to that of E27, while the size of E40 is larger than that of E27.

B22, equipped with a 2-pin screw, is another commonly used lamp holder type for incandescent bulbs.

GU lights. GU lamp (e.g., GU10) is a daily use bayonet-type. GU: G, means the lamp holder type; U signifies the tha is an U-shaped lamp; the number following “GU” means the distance between the two feet of the lamp base (size: mm). For example, GU10 means, the distance between the two feet of the lamp base is 10mm.

MR16, MR11 light bulbs. Starting with “MR”, followed by a number, this type of lamps are usually used for spot lighting for a small area. The lamps usually have two small pins. MR: Multiface Reflect, multi-faceted reflector (light cup), followed by a number that suggests the diameter of the lamp cup (unit is 1 / 8 inch). E.g., MR16′s diameter = 16 x 1 / 8 = 2 inches or = 50mm. The similar calculation for MR11.

PAR lamps are generally PAR20 PAR30 PAR36 PAR46 PAR56. The size may be long or short, large or small. Traditional par lamps are also recognized as down lights. They are regularly used to light up the stages, by working with dynamic-changing light, they are common lighting fixtures on the stages. However, because of the high power consumption, Par lamps are now progressively being swapped out by LED Par lamps. The the higher the value of the number that follows “Par”, the size of the lamp is larger. For example., PAR38 has a larger size than that of PAR30.
